Chapter Sixteen

DANI

I closed the door behind me, looking down at the crack right underneath the wood, watching as the light that flooded in from the living room grew dark. I let out a sigh and decided I wasn’t tired enough to go to bed. I had exploring to do while I had the chance. I looked to the right, seeing a queen-sized bed still perfectly made. The sheets were crisp and had the perfect lines of folds along them. The comforter was a royal blue color and plush, like I could settle into it and feel as if I was along the clouds. The room was much bigger than I thought, but it didn’t have much furniture, so that might have made it feel bigger than it was.

A light gray large dresser faced the bed and a large-scale window behind it. The curtains were closed slightly, but a sliver of the night sky peeked through, allowing me to see bits of the moon through the rain. I brought it up to my eyes and saw the same woman from the photo on the mantle. Her hair was a bit shorter in this photo, but not by much. She had a smile on her face that I’m sure Nicholas’s father fell immediately in love with.

He may not want to talk much about his mother, but Nicholas cared about her, even if it was with just the smallest piece of his heart. Why was his father so vague about her? They both spoke about Jonah like his father had some issue with him that went beyond the dealings with Nicholas…so what was it? I looked more deeply at the photo, wishing this woman could somehow speak to me and tell me what I wanted to know. I placed the photo back in the drawer and closed it. I padded to the closet in the far-left corner and cut the light on. There weren’t many clothes, but I had been expecting that. There were a good number of jackets and some
